Famous People of Albania

Pashko Vasa also known as Vaso Pasha, Wasa Pasha or Vaso Pashė Shkodrani, was an Albanian writer, poet and publicist of the Albanian National Awakening, and Governor of Lebanon from 1882 until his death.

Safet Butka was an Albanian professor, politician and nationalist. Son of famous patriot Sali Butka, he organized the student demonstrations in April 1939 during the Italian invasion and was interned in Ventotene. Upon his return he organized antifascist movements in his native region and was one of the founders of the nationalist organization Balli Kombėtar. Distressed by internal civil war in Albania, he killed himself in 1943.

Naum Veqilharxhi born Naum Bredhi was an Albanian lawyer and scholar. In 1844, he created a unique alphabet for the Albanian language using characters he had created himself, the Vithkuqi script. Veqilharxhi is one of most prominent figures of the early Albanian National Awakening, and is considered by Albanians as its first ideologue.

Pjetėr Filip Arbnori was an Albanian gulag survivor. He was dubbed "the Mandela of the Balkans" by Albanian statesmen because of the length of his 28 year internment. He was born in Durrės, on the Adriatic coast. President Topi bestows the Nation's Honor Order upon Pjetėr Arbnori.
